Sir Hugh Stevenson Roberton (1874-1952) was a Scottish composer and Britain’s leading choral master. He founded the Glasgow Orpheus Choir and raised standards in choral technique and interpretation so much that for fifty years the choir was the best in Britain and toured all over the world. Roberton was a pacifist and member of the Peace Pledge Union and he and the choir were banned from broadcasting on the BBC during World War II. The Peace Pledge Union still exists.
